GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) change how hungry you feel. That is how they work. But when you eat and drink less, everyday basics like fluids and the minerals that come with food can quietly slip.
This guide explains why hydration still matters on a GLP-1, what to watch for, and simple habits that make it easier.
Why hydration can slip on a GLP-1
Three things tend to change at once:
- You eat less. Food supplies a good share of daily water and minerals. Fruit and vegetables are about 90% water by weight.
- You may feel less thirsty, or simply forget to drink. A smaller appetite often means fewer drinks with meals and snacks.
- Stomach side effects are common. In Wegovy's clinical trials, 44% of adults on the 2.4 mg dose reported nausea, 30% diarrhea and 24% vomiting, compared with 16%, 16% and 6% on placebo.
The Wegovy prescribing information warns that stomach side effects such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration. In some patients this has been linked to kidney problems, so doctors are told to monitor kidney function when these side effects happen. The Zepbound label carries a similar warning.
What electrolytes actually do
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge in your body. The main ones are:
| Electrolyte | What it does in the body |
|---|---|
| Sodium | Helps maintain fluid balance and supports nerve signaling |
| Potassium | Supports normal muscle function and nerve signaling |
| Magnesium | Involved in normal muscle and nerve function |
You get most of them from food. When you eat less, you may get less of them too.
How much fluid do you need?
The Institute of Medicine's general guide is about 2.7 liters (91 oz) of total water a day for women, from drinks and food combined. Your needs change with heat, activity and your health. We cover this in more detail in How much water should you drink on semaglutide or tirzepatide?
If you take a GLP-1, ask your prescriber what fluid target is right for you, especially if you have kidney or heart conditions or follow a sodium or fluid limit.
Signs you might not be drinking enough
Common signs can include:
- Feeling thirsty or having a dry mouth
- Dark yellow urine, or urinating less often
- Headache or tiredness
- Feeling light-headed when you stand up
Call your doctor if you can't keep fluids down, have vomiting or diarrhea that won't stop, feel very dizzy or confused, or barely pass urine. Those need medical care, not a drink mix. See Feeling tired or dizzy on Ozempic or Wegovy? for more on when to call.
Simple daily hydration habits
- Start the day with a full glass or bottle, before coffee.
- Sip steadily. Small amounts often are easier than large amounts at once when your stomach feels full.
- Set reminders, or keep a marked bottle on your desk.
- Eat water-rich foods when you can: soups, yogurt, fruit and vegetables.
- Keep protein and strength training in the plan. A 2025 joint advisory from four US nutrition and obesity organizations recommends adequate protein plus strength training to help preserve lean mass on a GLP-1.
- Make it something you enjoy. A flavored drink can make plain water easier to finish.
Why muscle matters too
Weight loss is never only fat. In the STEP-1 trial of semaglutide, body scans showed that about 38–39% of the weight lost was lean mass. That measure includes water and organ tissue, not only muscle, but it is one reason experts stress protein and strength training. Read more in How to protect muscle while losing weight on a GLP-1.
Where Zibby fits
Zibby Hydration is a zero-sugar daily drink mix designed for women on a GLP-1 routine. Each stick adds sodium, potassium and magnesium, vitamins C, B6 and B12, and 1,360 mg of creatine monohydrate to your water.
It is not a medication, does not treat side effects and does not replace medical advice. It is simply a way to make a daily hydration habit easier to keep. See what's inside Zibby →
Frequently asked questions
Do I need electrolytes on Ozempic or Wegovy?
Many people get enough from food and water. If you are eating much less, have stomach side effects or feel unwell, ask your prescriber whether you need more fluids or electrolytes.
Can you get dehydrated on a GLP-1?
Yes. The Wegovy and Zepbound labels note that nausea, vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Contact your doctor if symptoms are severe or don't stop.
How much water should I drink on semaglutide?
A general guide for women is about 2.7 liters of total water a day from drinks and food. Ask your prescriber what's right for you.
Is plain water enough?
Often, yes. An electrolyte drink can make a hydration habit easier for some people, but it is not a substitute for medical care when you are unwell.
